Ajax Systems, an international security company that originated in Ukraine, has stepped up to protect four of seven murals created by the elusive artist Banksy in the Kyiv region. These artworks emerged last year as a tribute to the resilience of Ukrainians amid the Russian invasion. This initiative underscores the significant cultural and historical value these murals hold during wartime.
After an attempted theft of a mural in Hostomel, Ajax Systems acted promptly by outfitting the murals with state-of-the-art security features, including shockproof glass and alarms. Sergey, a spokesperson for Ajax, announced on February 22, just days before the invasion's anniversary, that this undertaking was encouraged by both regional and local military administrations. Oleh Torkunov from the Kyiv Regional Military Administration emphasized the importance of preserving these murals as reminders of hope triumphing over darkness and preventing further vandalism.
In Hostomel, where resistance was strong against initial invasions, a mural of a woman in a gas mask represents the community's spirit.
Ajax Systems extended their protection solutions to other murals in Irpin and Horenka, areas also affected by the conflict. One of the most renowned pieces, situated in Borodyanka, depicts a gymnast performing a handstand on a bombed structure, symbolizing resilience amidst adversity.
The security measures involve motion detectors, shock and vibration sensors, and translucent polycarbonate barriers. An especially significant mural showing a boy in a judo outfit, seemingly throwing a figure resembling Vladimir Putin, receives additional protection with a temporary structure equipped with a LifeQuality air monitor and WallSwitch relay, ensuring its preservation.
Amina Yepisheva, representing Ajax Systems, confirmed that the venture, costing over half a million hryvnias (approximately $13,500), was entirely funded by the company, without direct communication with Banksy.
Valentine Hrytsenko, the chief marketing officer at Ajax Systems, remarked that while street art typically doesn't require security, the ongoing war demands these precautions, especially with the potential collapse of the damaged structures. For Ukrainians, Banksy's works are symbols of resilience and continue to attract international attention despite the absence of tourism. The murals serve as pivotal emblems of defiance and hope that the world must safeguard.
