Derrick Adams' Exhibit Inspired by Beauty-Supply Stores Opens in Seoul

Introduction

Gagosian is set to unveil a new collection by artist Derrick Adams in September at their first exhibition in South Korea. Titled "Derrick Adams: The Strip," this show draws inspiration from the window displays of beauty-supply stores and will be held in the Seoul headquarters of Amorepacific, a leading Korean beauty conglomerate known for brands like Sulwhasoo, Laneige, and Innisfree. The exhibition will run from 3 September to 12 October in a space on the ground floor of the David Chipperfield-designed building.

Gagosian's Entry into South Korea

The debut exhibition in South Korea for Gagosian has been made possible largely due to the efforts of Jiyoung Lee, who was hired last year to lead the gallery's operations in South Korea. Lee brings extensive connections within the Korean market to the gallery. She previously worked on the 2022 Andreas Gursky exhibition at the Amorepacific Museum of Art.

Adams' New Series

According to Gagosian, Adams' new series is inspired by the window displays of beauty-supply stores located from Brooklyn, near his studio, to other countries he has visited. The paintings feature mannequin heads adorned with vibrant wigs, surrounded by elements like bricks and sidewalks, evoking city life.

A Strategic Move

"This is his first exhibition in Korea, and we felt it would be unexpected," said Gagosian senior director Nick Simunovic to The Art Newspaper. "We are treating the art community and our client base in Korea with enormous respect, as we demonstrate our commitment by showcasing top Western artists in Seoul."

South Korea as an Art Hub

With the tenth largest economy in the world, South Korea is becoming a significant hub for the Asian art market. This is partly due to increased censorship in China and strict Covid-19 lockdowns in Hong Kong. Since 2022, South Korea has been hosting Frieze Seoul, catering to a young and burgeoning base of art collectors.

Gagosian’s Long-term Strategy

Gagosian has been active in Asia for nearly two decades. "Our strategy is straightforward: to provide our artists with a platform to be seen, understood, and appreciated in Asia," says Simunovic. "This exhibition aligns with the strategy we started 17 years ago."
